Remembering Europe ist ein Dokumentarfilm aus der Zukunft, der von 2040 aus auf die europäische Krise zurückblickt, und dabei fragt: “Erinnerst du dich an Europa?” Mit dieser Frage im Raum werden alte Landkarten und Archivmaterialien ausgepackt, Milleniums-Konzepte und -Probleme wiederaufgegriffen, und Erinnerungen und Visionen verschiedener ProtagonistInnen verwoben. Die Krise erscheint als Moment von Leben oder Tod, in dem neue Sichtweisen und handlungsformen möglich – bzw. unausweichlich – werden. Europa, der Kontinent, die Union, die Währung, die Nationalstaaten, die Grenzen… wie war das noch mal? Migration und Bewegungsfreiheit sind Kernpunkte des Films, der die Jahren der sogenannten Flüchtlingskrise aufarbeitet. Nicht alle erinnern sich gleich daran, nicht alle haben die gleichen Erinnerungen: die Frage um die Erinnerung ist immer auch eine politische.

2040 and the sun is shining: does anybody remember Europe? This film travels across the continent asking people about their experiences and memories of Europe and the EU, as lived territory, social and (geo)political construct. The
crisis of 2008-2018 weights heavy in collective memory, yet stories remain fragmented. How to narrate a crisis of the imagination and of capital-H history? Mapping and re-tracing conjectures and territories, Remembering Europe tells a
story of Europe through fragments and contradictions, feelings and flashbacks. A docu-fiction-essay, it is based on the method of the future archive, weaving together performative interviews with poetic intuitions. More than a meditation
on the future, this film is a meditation on the possibilities and limits of the imagination. For what is memory, but lived imagination?
